Electronic data protection insurance is one of a charter school’s most misunderstood but crucial insurance coverage.   Electronic data protection, or EDP, insurance is vital to safeguard your school’s electronic data in case of loss.

What does EDP coverage protect against?

Lost or damaged electronic data

It provides coverage to replace or restore your electronic data lost due to an insured loss, like a fire that destroys your computer system or virus.

Interruption of computer operations

Many EDP policies also cover the loss of income your school realizes due to data loss.

E-commerce coverage

Though this coverage doesn’t usually apply to charter schools, EDP coverage can also protect against the loss of electronic data used in e-commerce activities and the business income associated with that loss.

Electronic data loss insurance does not cover the following:

Your liability due to data loss (not a third party)

Very few electronic data protection policies provide liability coverage you may have to a third party due to a loss of your electronic data.

Your mistakes

Most EDP policies will not cover losses due to mistakes in processing electronic data or in designing, implementing, or supporting computer systems or networks unless those mistakes result in a covered claim.

Employee actions

Electronic data policies do not usually provide coverage for data losses if they result from employees’ actions.
