School groundskeepers work very hard to help keep their playgrounds and grassy areas clean and debris-free. Their ability to do so helps protect the garden and students from injuries. However, we have found that groundskeepers could use a little help maintaining their health and safety while at work. So we have put together a tip sheet to help you stay safe and claims-free while at work.
Common Job Hazards and Safety Tips
Power Tools
Any employee using power tools is more likely to be injured while on the job. They are exposed to moving parts, hot surfaces, and electrical shock.
Tips to stay injury free:
- Inspect all equipment for loose or damaged parts before use.
- Never operate gas-powered equipment indoors.
- Keep lawnmower blades sharp.
- Wear all appropriate safety equipment, like goggles, gloves, and steel-toed boots.
Ergonomics Hazards
With constant lifting and straining during the day, groundskeepers are more susceptible to lower back injuries and repetitive motion injuries like tennis elbow.
Tips to avoid claims:
- Follow proper lifting guidelines – Keep the load close to your body, squat and lift with your legs, and keep your back straight.
- Use a doll, cart, or hydraulic lift to move heavy objects. Do not rely upon back belts.
- Store the heaviest items on shelves at waist height.
Slip and Fall Hazards
- Identify the cause of the slippery floor and address the problem to eliminate the hazard.
- Always use a footstool or ladder to reach for objects.
- Wear shoes with non-skid soles.
Heat/Sun
- Use wrap-around sunglasses to reduce your risk of cataracts.
- Wear thin, light-colored long pants, a long-sleeve shirt, and a hat.
- Use sunscreen.
- Drink plenty of cool water throughout the day.
