I just came across an article reporting a discrimination lawsuit filed against Truebright Science Academy Charter School in Philadelphia. According to the report, 9 employees filed complaints with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in 2011 and were told in January they could proceed with the lawsuit.
In the suit, they allege the school “engaged in a pattern of hiring, promoting and paying less-qualified Turkish nationals more than American-born educators who were certified and had more experience.”
The reason why this article stood out to me and why we thought we should share it with our Nevada and Las Vegas charter school clients is because the lawsuit highlights the need for Employment Practices Liability Insurance.
Employment Practices Liability Insurance (EPLI) protects your charter school from these types of lawsuits. In fact, in addition to insurance coverage for a settlement amount (if there is one), the policy actually provides defense costs coverage as well to help pay attorneys for your charter school’s defense. This is an extremely important part of the policy as defense costs can often be just as expensive as the actual settlement amount itself.
If you would like to find out more about this coverage you can read about it from this previous blog post.
Or, if you would like, you can contact our office directly and we will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
Also, with the average settlement amount for employee-related claims now hovering around $125,000, it’s more important than ever that Nevada charter schools carry this type of coverage to protect themselves.
