Charter school general liability policies can insure the institution, its trustees, directors, officers, faculty, and employees (at the option of the educational institution) against liability arising out of bodily injury, personal injury, and third-party property damage occurring because of wrongful or negligent acts attributable to the insured.
Some general liability policies will also protect against a wide range of potential claims, including alcohol abuse, campus crime, and sexual misconduct, and molestation. (Otherwise, this coverage must be purchased separately.)
Policy Limits
Most general liability policies start with a $1 million/$3 million aggregate primary coverage per occurrence, with some insurance companies offering limits of up to $40 million available under umbrella and excess policies (exceptions apply).
Definition of Insured
Most general liability policies cover employees, trustees, volunteers acting on behalf of the institution, students (when acting to comply with the institution’s code of conduct), and committees, including institutional review boards (for nonprofessional liability).
Worldwide Protection
Some general liability policies also provide worldwide coverage, meaning that lawsuits are not brought in U.S. courts. Worldwide protection is even more critical as educators and students increase their geographic footprint.
